Stress and Crohn's Disease

Often, people with Crohn's disease will benefit from stress-reduction therapies. Stress can trigger Crohn's symptoms, including diarrhea. It can also cause damage to intestinal tissue. Learning to manage stress can greatly decrease your symptoms.

Try the following to reduce stress:
  • Exercise on a regular basis. Of course, it's important to discuss any exercise plan with your doctor.
  • Practice biofeedback, a process that helps you control your body's response to stress.
  • Learn to relax. Yoga and meditation are great relaxation techniques, as are breathing exercises.
In addition to the above, you can better cope with stress by reserving at least 30 minutes a day for an activity you enjoy, whether it be cooking, reading, gardening or talking to a friend on the phone.
