ulcer: An open sore that bleeds and discharges pus. These sores are often caused by inflammation resulting from infection or autoimmune disorders.

ulcerative colitis: Inflammation of the colon, caused by infection. This form of colitis also has sores (ulcers) that form when inflamed cells die and begin to bleed and discharge pus.

upper gastrointestinal (GI) exam: An upper GI exam allows a doctor to view and diagnose the esophagus, stomach and beginning of the small intestine.
